Dan McCann – The original Farloe Man

Lifford Stadium is delighted to be hosting a sweep stake in memory of the legendary greyhound breeder and trainer Dan McCann.

The picture above shows Dan, second from left, marking the achievements of the great I’m Slippy, winner of the 1983 English Greyhound Derby who was reared at Dan’s world famous ‘Farloe’ farm, just outside Limavady. I’m Slippy also won an Irish National Sprint at Dunmore and went on to be a hugely influential sire.

The stake is very kindly sponsored by Dan’s grand nephew, Seamus McCloskey and we asked Seamus to say a few words about Dan

“I am pleased to sponsor a small stake for Dan McCann, my grand Uncle.

Dan learned about training greyhounds as assistant trainer to Doc Callanan at Wembley in the 1930/40s. He set up his Farloe kennel at his Farlow farm, Limavady, County Derry and from there established the famous Farloe prefix. He won classics in both coursing and track winning among others the Belsize cup on the coursing field and the Irish National sprint with Farloe Border who broke the track record in the final doing 24.04 in 1942.

He remains one of the very few to have bred, owned and trained a classic winner. Dan told the story that Border was one blue pup in a litter of 7 brindle dogs. The litter was struck down  by the scourge of greyhounds then distemper. He recalled the little blue walked round his brothers licking the eyes of his brothers as they passed away one after the other but never got sick himself. Dan often  wondered what those bigger stronger brindle dogs might have been when the smallest went on to classic glory.

Dan loved his dogs till he died aged 97 and right to the end family knew the dogs went well on a Saturday night if Dan was first to the altar rail at Sunday mass. Dan was a great supporter of Derry, Lifford and the IGB/ICC. Indeed he was granted the lifelong use of the Farloe Prefix for free in thanks for his contributions to the ICC and the sport, a great accolade and a true mark of how he was respected in the Greyhound world. A wonderful  man, a great grand uncle to me and is sorely missed.”
